General Description

This is a non-permanent position that will work on an intermittent basis.

Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours in a 12-month period.

Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of the patrons at the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation swimming pools. A Lifeguard's major responsibility is to observe swimmers and enforce regulations in the guarding of life and the prevention of accidents at the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation swimming pools.

Essential Functions

REQUIRED SKILLS:

A lifeguard must have knowledge of water hazards, lifesaving techniques and first aide, recognize hazardous situations, and adopt effective courses of action. A lifeguard must also have effective communication skills and engage positively with the public. While performing the duties of this position, a lifeguard is frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. This position requires mobility. Duties require attentiveness to visual and audible cues for recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or in process of unsafe behavior. This position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first-aid techniques.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Rescue persons in distress or in danger of drowning

Applies resuscitation techniques and otherwise renders first aid

Observes swimmers to ensure they adhere to swimming pool rules and maintains order

Keeps the pool area clean and clear of debris, trip hazards, or other possible injury hazards

Maintains pool equipment and ensures the proper sanitation of pool and bathhouse facilities

Meets and deals with the public in a positive and firm manner

Warns swimmers of improper activities or hazards

Notifies supervisors of any accidents, rescues, or problems that arise

Report any equipment in need of repair

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: Less than High School

Minimum Experience and Qualifications: No experience

Special Job Requirements

At least 15 years of age by November 30, 2022

StarGuard Elite Lifeguard

American Safety & Health Institute Basic First Aid

American Safety & Health Institute Bloodborne Pathogens

American Safety & Health Institute Basic Life Support (BLS) (BLS is Professional Rescuer CPR and AED for Adults, Children, and Infants)

American Safety & Health Institute Emergency Oxygen (if taught)

**Applicants with the following certification will need to complete the StarGuard crossover course before being placed at a pool. **

America Red Cross Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Professional Rescuer Certification

American Red Cross First Aid Certification

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification

Steps to City of Tucson Lifeguard Certification


Step 1: Apply for the Lifeguard position here and register for the free Lifeguard Swim Test on EZEEreg.com

Step 2: Pass the Lifeguard Swim Test and In-Person Interview

Step 3: You will receive an email from Workday to complete your Pre-Hire information. Once you have completed your Pre-Hire information, send an email to ParksHR@tucsonaz.gov to schedule an appointment to be fingerprinted.

Step 4: Complete the Online StarGuard course (6hrs..) and the In-Person StarGuard course (16 hrs.). MUST COMPLETE THE ONLINE COURSE FIRST. You will be paid for these courses.

Step 5: Receive your pool placement from your Supervisor.
