Job Description:


The Education Outreach Specialist provides educational programming to Utah K-12 schools and students. They will present engaging school assembly-style programs to grades K-3 and 4-6 as well as classroom presentations focusing on 6th grade SEEd standards. Successful presenters will learn to provide instruction in physics and astronomy concepts using a pedagogical approach consistent with state standards (training will be provided). As additional outreach programming is developed, the Outreach Education Specialist will also participate in programming at local libraries and schools in the afternoons and evenings.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
  • Actively review the calendar of outreach school visits several weeks in advance of each visit in coordination with the rest of the education department.
  • Communicate as needed with schools prior to visit to verify and finalize any necessary details.
  • Travel to schools along the Wasatch Front in one of Clark Planetarium's vans (most visits will be within a 1 hour drive).
  • Manage time and travel to arrive punctually at each school. A typical daily schedule includes arriving at a school with 30-45 minutes setup time and leaving Clark Planetarium between 7:0am - 9:00am.
  • Conduct science assemblies and grade level or classroom presentations.
  • Communicate with school teachers and staff on-site to coordinate setup of equipment and placement of classes and assemblies.
  • Provide inspiring, engaging, and educational experiences for Utah teachers and students.
  • Accurately gather, record, and submit required information for each visit to be used for internal and state reports.
  • Other duties as assigned. Examples include but are not limited to: teaching summer camp sessions, participating in school "science night" type programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Highly dependable, punctual, and accountable
  • Engaging and enthusiastic personality
  • Ability to describe and convey science principles and concepts to a wide range of ages and backgrounds
  • Able to work independently and adapt to situations
  • Must successfully complete online driver's safety program (approximately 4 hours online) and other Salt Lake County trainings
  • Valid Utah driver's license and good driving record
  • Able to perform physical duties including:
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Must be comfortable using educational and scientific equipment including but not limited to: liquid nitrogen, flammable gases, compressed air, etc.
