UW Medicine's Enterprise Records and Health Information currently has an outstanding opportunity for a CODING EDUCATION ANALYST.

The Coding Education Analyst position reports to the Coding Education Manager within the Enterprise Records and Health Information Management department.

This position is responsible for performing daily activities related to coding auditing, education and training of the content areas ERHI has coding oversight for UW Medicine. Coding Education Analysts serve as the organizational coding content experts; they respond to general questions and inquires related to DRG, ICD, CPT and/or HCPCS coding, monitor for regulatory changes, engage in the development and implementation of auditing and monitoring plans, engage and participate in the creation and delivery of educational materials. Coding Education Analysts must have a high level of knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology to code the complex records of a Level I trauma center.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Primarily responsible for performing regular coding audits, analyze results and create audit reports. Provide individual and group education and training to
  • Coding staff on the results of coding audits.
  • Review DRG and CPT claim denials for commercial payers.
  • Monitor developments in related rules, regulations and coding changes; make recommendations to maintain coding compliance, quality and mitigate risk.
  • Evaluate billing/coding/documentation behavior and identify recommendations for improvement. Provide consultation and best practice guidance to engage and influence outcomes.
  • May serve as an organization resource and content expert for documentation and coding guidelines. Provide expert coding content knowledge to UW Medicine staff and other key stakeholders. Coordinate with, and provide guidance to, Compliance, Clinical Documentation Improvement, Utilization Management, Clinical Resource Management, Revenue Integrity, Charge Master Operations and Patient Financial Services on matters involving coding and/or billing compliance related issues.
  • Train new Coders to UW Medicine and/or Coders who have moved to a new Coding team.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of role specific coding training for ERHI staff; including the effective monitoring, auditing and risk assessment activities.
  • Review, analyze and determine effectiveness of training, assess effectiveness against entity/workforce member type/and industry key performance indicators, and recommend enhancements to training content and user experience.
  • Maintain written documentation of actions, activities or assessments (e.g., investigations, patient rights, audits, process improvement projects, corrective action plans, education and training plans) in accordance with state and federal law, and institutional policies. Retains records in accordance with the UW Retention Schedule and department policy.
  • May perform special projects.
  • Perform related duties, as required.

    REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Health Sciences discipline, Business Administration or related field, or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience;
    Coding knowledge and experience in facility and/or professional coding;
  • Four years increasingly responsible related experience, including coding auditing, analysis, education and training.
    Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC),
  • Extensive knowledge of DRG, ICD, CPT and/or HCPCS coding principles and guidelines;
  • Proven communication, organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Successful experience in working both independently and in teams.
  • Successful experience in working within a multifaceted, highly matrixed organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationships, effectively manage competing priorities, and accurately complete highly detailed work.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and to work in a high volume, high accuracy work environment with deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and medical staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite.
  • Basic Knowledge of Office 365.

    Desired:
  • Experience in an academic healthcare environment.
  • Experience and proficiency with Epic and/or Cerner products.
  • Experience with 3M encoder.
