Purpose
This position involves the Assembly of various Controls and Components.

Input Material
Depending on what is being assembled, some input material is supplied as basic material on which further manufacturing processes are performed (such as wire that is wound into heater coils and annealed). Other input material consists of components that are purchased, or come from another Manufacturing group, and are assembled into larger components and/or finished products (such as contactors, indicator lights and other components that are assembled into an Automatic Bus Transfer (ABT) switch).

Essential Functions
Wide varieties of functions are performed by the Assemblers and are broken down by Proficiency Levels:

Assembler II
  • Assembles components and sub-assemblies; components, such as heater coils, require multiple manufacturing type operations, like cutting wire, winding, soldering and annealing the coil and checking resistance between operations to ensure it's within tolerance. Assembly jobs may involve stenciling, installing mechanical components, wire connections, adjusting, calibrating and testing the assembly. Some components that are assembled go into other assemblies and may require additional specific operations. Components and procedures include printed circuit and terminal boards, indicator lights, push button switches, selector switches, rotary relays, W/L, DRS and GE contactors, thermal/time delay relays (including calibration), spot welding, motor starters and many others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor Control & Component Assembly.
Proficiency:
Level 2: Setup - Operation - Maintenance - Has attained a moderate to high level of proficiency and requires occasional supervision.. Generally has a minimum of 1 year of experience. Can perform the assembly of moderately complex equipment - on new products, learns the assembly procedures from drawings as well as assistance from other Assemblers and Supervision. On existing products, follows written documentation. Is familiar with the specialized equipment used to assemble components that the Assembler has been trained to assemble. Maintains good Customer Relations when customer/government reps are present to witness tests.

Quality/Continuous Improvement/Productivity - Inspects own work. Represents Control & Component Assembly Department on Continuous Improvement Task Teams. Always works toward improving assembly methods and efficiency; reports significant improvements to Supervisor.

Problem Solving - Can work out most of the problems that arise concerning work being performed - utilizes the experience of the Assembler I, Team Leader Assembly, and the Supervisor Control & Component Assembly.

Blueprints & Traveler - Can correctly interpret the drawings and Traveler documents, but may need some assistance when working on new, or more complex jobs.

Physical Requirements
Job usually requires more standing than sitting - depending on the components being assembled, up to about half of the work can be done while seated. Since overhead and portable cranes are available in all work areas, Assemblers are not required to lift more than 50 pounds.

Environmental / Safety Issues
Keeps work area clean and free of extraneous materials. Spends 90% to 95% of time in Control & Component Assembly work area. Ensures that all safety procedures are followed as stated on posted signs and in Company policy.

Training
  • Requirements for this position are to also be engaged in: 5S, Continuous Improvement, On-Time Delivery, Routine Total Preventative Maintenance and the submission of Improvement Ideas.
  • Cross trains on all of the positions in the Control & Component Assembly Department as directed by the Supervisor Control & Component Assembly.
Education / Certification
High school / Trade school graduate. Must have good eyesight and very good manual dexterity. Has passed Certification Test established by the Company for each Assembly procedure that is used without close supervision.

Finished Product
Ensures that the equipment meets all required tests and that it is moved to the next position on the Traveler in a timely manner.

Reports to: Supervisor Control & Component Assembly. Ensures that the Supervisor Control & Component Assembly is informed of all progress and problems.
