Job Title: Veterinary Technician

Reports To: Medical Director

Job Description: The veterinary technician is responsible for ensuring that each animal who is received at HSCAZ has a timely precursory screening and evaluation to determine the general condition of the animal, makes recommendations for and provides follow-up treatment and oversees protocols for preparing animals for adoption. The veterinarian technician also collaborates with the contracted Veterinarian to determine appropriate and humane treatment for animals who are symptomatic of disease or have sustained injuries, assist in surgeries and help run the mobile spay/neuter clinic.

Requirements/Physical Demands: Veterinary Technician Certification from accredited school and/or related experience. Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds, walk dogs of up to 130 pounds, work on feet all day, and read and understand English. Some computer skills necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides animals treatment for routine problems
  • Coordinates spay/neuter, surgical procedures, treatment, and microchip procedures.
  • Create and maintain protocols and procedures including keeping the clinic up on OSHA and Veterinary board standards.
  • Provides routine postoperative care
  • Conducts routine collection procedures such as of swabs, urine and fecal samples, blood draws etc.
  • Conducts routine medical health exams on all animal upon intake and animals pending PUFA
  • Administers medications
  • Vaccinates animals
  • Maintain records by accurately recording treatments and test results charts and/or other medical records in the animal’s folder and onto PetPoint including all shelter and public animals.
  • Maintains inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies including ordering.
  • Oversees cleaning of animals in treatment or on medication
  • Ensures sterile conditions and equipment
  • Prepares and posts daily animal alerts, treatment reports and action items for all unusual circumstances or at risk animals for staff review and implementation.
  • Assist with surgeries
  • Assist and oversee preparation for surgeries and mobile clinic.
  • Oversees Veterinary Assistant.
  • Euthanize animals as necessary.
  • Prepare the mobile surgical unit for surgeries. This includes cleaning, disinfecting, restocking and other tasks assigned by the Medical Director or advising Veterinarian.
  • Clean and sanitize surgical instruments and prepare them for surgery.
  • Carry out other duties assigned by the advising Veterinarian or Medical Director.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour

Experience:
