Summary/Objective:

In this role, the Transportation Safety Specialist will be providing safety leadership, compliance support, and guidance to Custom Air Trucking’s facility, with emphasis of ensuring compliance with all the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (DOT/FMSCR). The Transportation Safety Specialist will be responsible in writing to implement and enforce all company fleet safety policies and standards. In addition, this position will also be responsible for conducting audits, DOT Compliance inspections, safety meetings and safety training, and will be responsible for follow-up on all injuries, incidents & accidents for Custom Air Trucking.

  • Implement standardized processes for Driver Background Checks, Pre-Employment Medical Screening & DOT Physicals, Previous Employer Release of Information, etc. in coordination & conjunction with Human Resources (HR), Safety, and Operations Personnel.
  • Implement standardized procedures for hours of service compliance in coordination & conjunction with Operations Personnel.
  • Prepare and submit required Federal and State DOT Trucking Registrations, Licensing, Compliance Reports, etc.
  • Conduct incident investigations, root-cause analysis, follow-up, and closure of action items, and leverage learning across organization for all commercial vehicle accidents involving Company personnel and/or equipment; including corrective action plan co-development (with manager), implementation and follow-up.
  • Implement and manage detailed, proactive systems to ensure compliance with Federal and State DOT Trucking regulations and Company requirements, with a strong emphasis on a Management Systems approach to compliance.
  • Conduct Trucking & Transportation applicability determinations, compliance audits, and risk assessments to ensure effective and sustainable implementation of Regulatory and Company requirements at each of terminal location.
  • Communicate impact summaries of future regulatory changes to Leadership and Operations Management.
  • Seek out industry best practices and more effective and efficient methods to achieve Operational Excellence in Incident Prevention and DOT Trucking Compliance; including staying abreast of all DOT and regulatory changes and trends.
  • Assist with health & safety technical guidance, plan/procedure development and implementation, incident notification/response, and other routine compliance issues and requests.
  • Conduct and contribute to safety meetings and driver training programs on a recurring basis.
  • Monitor third-party vendor systems and reports for driver qualification, and communicate with Managers to ensure only qualified drivers are dispatched.
  • Assist with training and compliance with Driver ELDs (Electronic Logging Device for hours of service).
  • Processing, verifying, auditing, and maintaining e-Logs and paper logs including device training for drivers and dispatchers
  • Compiling and preparing reports and documents pertaining to safety and compliance activities
  • Maintaining driver DOT qualifications
  • Spearhead numerous projects from inception to implementation as they relate to safety, compliance, maintenance and yard.
  • Assist with reviewing all SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for the Safety and Compliance area.
  • General administrative duties

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Logistics or other related transportation field
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in transportation, logistics and/or distribution
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal DOT rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of OSHA and Worker’s Compensation
  • Must have excellent planning, organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
