Job Purpose:
The Safety Specialist position is responsible for assisting the Safety Manager with the effective leadership of Safety and Health Programs and ensuring compliance with OSHA, MSHA, EPA, DOT, and industry standards. The Safety Specialist will serve as a professional resource to the organization by partnering with the Safety Manager and leadership to promote a positive sustainable integration of safety into our culture and drive our Commitment to Safe Service.
Responsibilities:
* Assist with the management and maintenance of the company's overall culture by driving action, engagement, and accountability through educating and engaging leaders to integrate safety into our everyday culture
* Active engagement in the company's safety leading indicator program, to include participation, training, and evaluation
* Investigate industrial incidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses to determine root-causes and preventive measures to determine how such incidents could be prevented in the future
* Report and review findings from incident investigations with the Safety Manager and recommend corrective actions
* Educate managers, supervisors and employees about effective work-related safety policies and practices.
* Support and participate in all local Safety Action Committees
* Support and maintain the Safety Management System (SMS) and ensure all incident reports are completed in a timely and accurate manner
* Assist in managing workers compensation claims
* Assist with the new employee safety on-boarding process
* Assist in the development/management of comprehensive Health and Safety policies and procedures, risk and job hazard analysis, and training programs to address safety operational functions
* Review employee safety programs to determine their adequacy
* Guidance and interpretation of all safety regulations
* Assist with maintaining liaisons with outside organizations such as fire departments, mutual aid societies, and rescue teams, so that emergency responses can be facilitated
* Assist with auditing and evaluations of workplace environments, equipment, and operations to ensure compliance with safety best practices and government regulations
* Verify that safety equipment is available to affected employees and monitor the equipment to ensure proper use
* Assist in preparation of documents to be used in legal proceedings and testify in such proceedings when necessary
* As necessary, interact with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies on the organizations' behalf
* Actively participate in operations and Corporate Health and Safety promotions
* The ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
* All other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in a related field, Occupational Health and Safety degree preferred
* 1-2 years' experience in Health and Safety required with an Occupational Health and Safety degree
* 4 years' experience in Health and Safety required with any other degree
* Certificates in Occupational Health and Safety preferred
* Must have experience in OSHA, MSHA, EPA and DOT
* Experience with writing and implementing health and safety policies and procedures
* Strong knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment
* Excellent written and oral communication skills are required
* Strong presentation skills are required
* Critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills
* Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple priorities
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and other business software applications is required.
* Ability to travel up to 50% of the time within Fabick's region (Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan)
Physical Requirements:
In addition to being able to sit, stand, walk, read, talk, write and hear, to perform the essential functions of this job an individual must be able to do the following additional activities: Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, occasionally bend, squat and climb. Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.
