The Division of Business Services (DBS) is dedicated to helping NYC small businesses start, operate, and thrive in New York City, while also leading systemic change to improve the regulatory environment for businesses.

The Neighborhood Development Division (NDD) works with community-based organizations to build vibrant neighborhoods where New Yorkers can shop, work and live across the five boroughs.

The Workforce Development Division (WDD) connects New Yorkers to high quality employment through a network of Workforce1 Career Centers, and connects workers and job-seekers with training to prepare them to grow their incomes through in-demand jobs.



Job Description:

We are looking for highly motivated and well-organized individuals to join us in making a difference for the City's workforce, small businesses, neighborhoods, and economic recovery.

The Program Coordinator supports efforts and initiatives designed to sustain and enhance the level of service delivery provided to entrepreneurs and business owners across the five boroughs. The responsibilities of the Program Coordinator are both strategic, in implementing best practices and maintaining relationships with community partners, and operational, in demonstrating consistency and accountability across all service providers.

The responsibilities of the Program Coordinator are not limited to:

  • Monitor vendor performance towards program goals;
  • Troubleshoot with vendor staff on operational challenges as they arise;
  • Analyze and document current policies and processes, develop necessary revisions and/or innovations;
  • Assist in creating Power Point presentations;
  • Proactively identify program problems, challenges, and opportunities and communicate to leadership;
  • Organize, analyze, and draw findings from surveys;
  • Ensure accurate and timely data input into SBS data systems;
  • Process and facilitate data requests and referrals;
  • Facilitate relationships and communication among staff at SBS, City Agencies, and external program partners;
  • Assist with event planning and coordination; ensure events requested by Executive Office, City Hall and partners are attended; represent the agency, program and services at events as needed;
  • Build and maintain relationships with service providers, community-based organizations (CBO), and other external stakeholders as needed;
  • Assist in managing program administration, scheduling, and coordination;
  • Support communications efforts around managed programs including development of social media content, and newsletter items;
  • Assist with the development and implementation of projects aimed at increased quality and efficiency of service;
  • Assist with projects that fulfill SBS’s mission and lead to more comprehensive services being offered to New York City small business owners;
  • Coordinate with other departments at SBS as well as external organizations to expand the adoption of the programs within the portfolio;
  • Interact with members of the public who are interested in programming, connecting them with the proper service provider for their needs;
  • Compile performance and outcome data for community events, partners, and other city agencies;
  • Cultivate partnerships that will lead to increased capacity, enhanced customer satisfaction, and more comprehensive services for customers;
  • Travel to all 5 boroughs as necessary;
  • Assist with other operational tasks and projects as required.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

  • Leadership ability and demonstrated success in environments with multiple stakeholders, several priorities, and challenging goals and deadlines;
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment and complete tasks in a proactive and timely manner;
  • Ability to work within cross-organizational multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Experience using customer relationship management tools or other database systems to track and manage services and outcomes desired;
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, strategic thinking and quantitative/qualitative skills;
  • Ability to work well with staff across a variety of positions and levels of seniority throughout the SBS and other relevant City agencies;
  • Ability to sensitively communicate with service providers, community-based organizations (CBO), and other external stakeholders as needed;
  • The ability to communicate effectively and persuasively through presentations and written work;
  • Ability to use and analyze data and other variables to make fact-based decisions;
  • Flexible, adaptable, customer-focused, and goal-oriented with a commitment to high standards of excellence;
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple program components and provide timely and clear direction to program participants in various locations across New York City;
  • Excellent research, writing, meeting facilitation and public speaking skills;
  • Ability to organize and drive projects to timely completion, through coalition and consensus building;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, including Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite applications/graphic design;
  • Bi-lingual/foreign language skills a plus.

Additional Information

The federal government provides student loan forgiveness through its Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) to all qualifying public service employees. Working with SBS qualifies you as a public service employee and you may be able to take advantage of this program while working full-time and meeting the program’s other requirements.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
