This is a paid internship where you will learn skills and get hands-on experience to help you in your future career.

JOB SUMMARY:

Vir Biotechnology is looking for an intern to join our drug discovery team in San Francisco. The intern, under guidance of a mentor, will design and implement cell and molecular biology assays to support the discovery and development of small molecule therapeutics to treat infectious diseases. You are a student who wants to use what you have learned in the classroom to help develop drugs in an industry R&D setting. You will work within a collaborative team of other passionate scientists and gain exposure to multiple projects that span several stages of the drug discovery process. This creates an exciting work environment with professional development opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Learn and apply principles of pharmacology to drug discovery
  • Contribute to design, execution, and analysis of laboratory-based experiments using molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, and microbiology approaches in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment
  • Collaborate with teammates to provide input and get feedback on experimental design and analysis
  • Prepare written documents and present findings to team members

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Currently enrolled in accredited college or university and pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in Cell Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Bacteriology, or related field of study. Must have completed (at minimum) the sophomore year of college
  • At least one year of academic laboratory research experience in a biological sciences discipline is required
  • Conceptual understanding of and hands-on experience with molecular, cellular, and microbiological approache
  • Work full time (35-40 hours per week)
  • Able to work independently, set priorities, and complete important deliverables
  • Record keeping and communication skills with demonstrated attention to detail
  • Motivated team player with experience with problem-solving
  • Work onsite in San Francisco office

STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERN/CO-OP POSITIONS:

  • Commit to an entire session (typically 12 weeks in the summer or fall) and commit to the number of hours needed
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • At least 18 years of age before the scheduled start date
  • If you are assigned to work in the lab areas, please be advised that you may be required or recommended to have your Hep B vaccination, flu vaccine and/or TB testing
