DESCRIPTION:

Jail Clerks start on 2nd shift (2:30p-10:30p) or 3rd shift (10:30p-6:30a) and work a rotating schedule of 5 days working and 2 days off and 5 days working and 3 days off.

Employees hired after 7-1-11 must be expected to work a minimum of 1200 hours annually to be enrolled in the Wisconsin Retirement System when hired. Dane County also provides 6 weeks of paid parental leave for birth or adoption of a child.

DEFINITION

Under minimal supervision, perform a wide variety of responsible and complex clerical duties necessary to the incarceration and release of residents; and to do related work as required. Incumbents will undergo an intense initial training period where they perform a limited number of less complex clerical duties, and progress with continued training to performing the full range of duties at the objective level at the end of the training period. This class is responsible for conducting transactions with other employees or the public in matters requiring detailed knowledge of laws, rules, procedures, policies, precedents, and activities, and for supplying information involving facts and interpretations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Confirms completion and accuracy of booking sheet, warrants, teletypes, bail information, sentencing documents and accurately records information in computer system; reads and interprets complex court orders and other paperwork affecting length of incarceration; computes sentence length, credit and release date; counts and records large sums of money for resident cash accounts and bail; confirms outstanding warrants on residents and sureties and coordinates the arrest of individuals with valid warrants; coordinates, completes and explains paperwork with co-workers and residents to affect their release from jail; controls activities in cash drawer for resident accounts and bail; balances cash drawer at end of shift; verifies, confirms, and cancels requests for Dane County arrest warrants; responds to numerous requests from the public and other agencies, via telephone, fax, electronic communication, and in person; audits files for accuracy of data entry, paperwork, sentencing and release information; monitors officer staging area for problems and requests back-up help as needed; maintains the control panel to operate cameras and doors to maintain a safe and secure environment; trains new staff members.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and four years of general clerical experience or two years experience working in a law enforcement, court, district attorney, or corrections environment, or law office with substantial responsibility for identifying, processing, and preparing a wide variety of legal papers associated with court actions. One (1) year of lead experience is preferred but not required.

Must be able to work a rotating five days on, two days off, five days on, three days off schedule and be able to work evenings, nights and weekends as required by the schedule. Must be able to maintain safety and security associated with working in a correctional facility. Must pass in- depth background investigation, including but not limited to, verification of education, work record from current and former employers, reference checks, criminal history checks, fingerprinting and drug testing. The incumbent will initially undergo an intensive training period, which will give the individual the capability of performing the full range of duties at the objective level at the completion of the training.

Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Wisconsin’s Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position’s responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant’s criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of various computer programs, including Windows, e-mail systems, word processing, spreadsheet and database programs; ability to interpret and apply policies, regulations and procedures; ability to handle overlapping multiple tasks; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, residents and co-workers in person and via telephone or electronic communications; ability to organize and prioritize tasks; ability to read and interpret complex court orders and paperwork; ability to deal effectively with a heavy workload; ability to handle large sums of money for resident cash and bail; ability to perform data entry with net keystrokes of 8,000 per hour with a minimum of 90% accuracy; ability to deal with difficult and angry people.

Pay: $28.46 - $31.02 per hour
