POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, and assigned under direct supervision of the Fire Marshal; performs a variety of technical and administrative work related to public education, fire inspection and fire prevention.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Reviews and approves site and building plans (commercial and residential) to assure compliance with all relevant codes and standards.
- Coordinates plan reviews with building division personnel to determine if review is needed.
- Reviews and approves fire suppression, fire alarm and detection, life-safety system, electrical and mechanical system plans.
- Reviews HAZMAT permits and perform HAZMAT inspections.
- Schedules and conducts field inspections for all types of structures and remodels.
- Inspects fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, fixed fire extinguishing systems, engineered smoke management systems, and other elements of fire prevention or protection systems.
- Provides support and training to field combat Fire department personnel to ensure that standard inspection procedures are implemented and followed.
- Responds to and investigates potential code violations.
- Meets with owners or tenants to review and explain code requirements.
- Issues warnings, correction notices or citations in order to secure code compliance.
- Establishes and maintains comprehensive records of all business transacted, such as complaints, inspections, investigations, notices served, and permit written.
- Testifies and presents evidence in court and or administrative hearings, as requested.
- Recommends and develops proposed fire prevention policies, procedures and codes.
- Coordinates activities with other city departments including local, county, state, and federal agencies as appropriate.
- Responds to and investigate fires as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education – Associate degree in fire science or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Experience – Three years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Licenses/Certifications –
o Obtain ICC Fire Inspector II within two years from date of hire.
o Current Utah Fire Investigator certification; NFA Fire Investigator certification or obtain within one year from date of hire.
o Valid Utah driver license.

o Effective operation of policies and procedures, building, fire, and electrical codes

o Fire prevention inspection software and investigation programs

o Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, business owners, and citizens on all fire inspection and prevention related issues
o Accurately interpret related building, fire, and electrical codes
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as running, sitting, balancing, working at heights, climbing stairs or ladders, bending/stooping, crouching/squatting, crawling, kneeling, working in awkward positions, reaching from shoulder height to overhead, reaching from waist to floor, have good extension and flexion, finger feel and operate foot controls. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Occasionally required to lift or carry weight of exert forces of 50-100 pounds.
Work is performed primarily in office, vehicle and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including bodily fluids, smoke noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils. Work assignments are broad and performed with little or no supervision.
Occasionally work near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemical, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in office setting and loud at emergency scene. Must be able to drive a motor vehicle.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- Monday to Friday, schedule is a 4 day/10 hour shift (TBD upon hire)
- Salary range: $24.40 - $38.97 (Starting wage is DOE)
